Chapter Twenty-three
âCan you talk?â Paige asked when I answered the phone.
I considered this. I was lying in the bathtub, soaking in the hottest water I could stand, and surrounded by mounds of verbena-scented bubbles. It was the first moment of peace Iâd had all day. Benâs first tooth was coming inâmonths ahead of scheduleâand heâd been a grouch. He wasnât coordinated enough to hold a teething ring, so all I could do was dope him with baby medicine and rub his sore gums, and even that didnât keep him from sobbing pitifully. When Aidan got home from work, he gave me a kiss and took over the baby duty, and Iâd escaped to the bathtub with a glass of cold chardonnay.
âMickey said youâre having a fling with Benâs doctor,â Paige said.
âThatâs a vicious lie!â I exclaimed. âI ran into him at the gym, and said hello, and she completely overreacted.â
âDonât forget, Mickâs sensitive when it comes to that sort of thing. First Mom and Dad divorced, and then Scott and I broke up,â Paige said.
âWell, Aidan has been annoying the crap out of me lately, but itâs nothing serious. All couples go through this after they have babies,â I said, feeling like an authority on the subject after my talk with Cora. And, of course, omitting the part where Iâd been engaging in my favorite fantasy of Dr. Prasad kissing me on the neck with his fabulous, full lips right when Paige called.
âOkay, good. But anyway, thatâs not the reason I called.â
âWhatâs up?â
âItâs Zack. Heâs getting a little . . . weird on me, and I need a second opinion,â she said.
âHow is he being weird?â
âI donât know exactly. Everythingâs been fine. Better than fine, itâs been wonderful. But lately, heâs just been so . . . I donât know. I canât explain. Itâs nothing that heâs done, really, Iâm just getting the feeling that heâs getting serious,â Paige said.
âThatâs normal. Itâs been, what, five months? And youâre not seeing anyone else,â I said.
âI think he wants to move in together,â Paige said.
âWhy do you think that?â
âBecause he suggested it over breakfast this morning.â
âWould that be a problem? Isnât he always staying over at your place anyway? It seems like heâs there whenever I call,â I said.
âItâs more complicated than that. Where would we live? Sure, he could stay here, but heâs building that house out by Lake Travis. Would he want me to give up my apartment and move in with him? I love my apartment,â Paige said.
âHow do you feel about Zack?â
âI . . . love him.â
âMore or less than the apartment?â
âHa-ha. I just donât know if Iâm ready to take that kind of step right now. Things are going so well, why not just leave it the way it is?â
âBecause thatâs what people do. They take the next step. Get married, have kids, lose all interest in one another, bicker, grow apart, and then retire to Boca. Itâs the normal progression of things.â
âOr you get married, find out your husband is gay, and end up going through a gut-wrenching divorce,â Paige said.
